Qi Tian received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Illinois in 2002. He received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1996, and B.E. degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, in 1992, respectively.
He has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) since 2002 and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) since 2003. Before he joined UTSA, he was a research assistant of Professor Thomas S. Huang at the Image Formation and Processing (IFP) group of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and a teaching assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC from 1997 to 2002. During 2000 and 2001, he was a summer Intern Researcher (2000, 2001) and visiting researcher with the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), Cambridge, MA. In summer 2003, he was a Visiting Professor of NEC Laboratories America, Inc., Cupertino, CA, in the Video Media Understanding group.
Dr. Tian's current research interests include Multimedia Information Retrieval, Computational Systems Biology, Biometrics, and Computer Vision. He has published over 70 refereed book chapters, journal and conference papers in these fields. He received a Best Student Paper Award (with Jie Yu) in IEEE ICASSP 2006. He has served as International Steering Commitee Member for ACM MIR (2006-2010), ICME 2006 Best Paper Committee Member, Program Co-chairs of Fifth International Conference on Intelligent Multimedia and Ambient Intelligence (IMAI 2007), Asia-Pacific Workshops on Visual Information Processing (VIP 2007), the 7th ACM SIGMM International Workshop on Multimedia Information Retrieval (MIR 2005), Multimedia Systems and Applications VIII, SPIE's International Symposium on Optics East (2006), Internet Multimedia Management Systems, SPIE's International Symposium on Optics East (2005); Special Session Chair of Pacific-rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2007); Publicity Co-Chairs of ACM Multimedia 2006, ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR 2007); Track Chair of Multimedia Content Analysis in IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (2006), Session and Special Session Chairs and TPC members of over 50 IEEE and ACM international conferences in multimedia and computer vision such as ACM Multimedia, ICME, PCM, ICPR, CIVR, MIR, ICASSP, HCI, and VCIP. He received several grants from Army Research Office (ARO), San Antonio Life Science Institute (SALSI), the Center of Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS), and UTSA Faculty Research Award (2004), all as Principal Investigator. He is currently in the Editorial Board of Journal of Multimedia, and the Guest Editor of Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU) for the Special Issue of Similarity Matching in Computer Vision and Multimedia.
He is a Senior Member (2003) of IEEE , and a Member (2004) of ACM.
